STORY SUMMARY: 

A family throws food out of their car window.  The food attracts an animal to the road which is hit by another car.  The family returns and finds the animal.  They take it to the wildlife center and learn that throwing food out by the road is harmful to animals because it draws them close to roads where they are hurt.

 

CRUX OF STORY/LESSON: 

Don’t throw food out of car windows!  It can attract animals to roads where they might get injured or killed.

OUTLINE OF STORY:

PROPS / ACTIONS:

·        Parent and child are riding down the road.

·        Child wants to throw empty soda cup out the window.

·        The Parent stops the child and explains how that would be littering.

·        Parent asks child to throw his apple core out of the window.

·        The child asks why its all right for him/her to letter.

·        Parent explains how apple is biodegradable.

·        Animal and friend see the apple core on the road.

·        They decide to wait and see if it attracts any thing they like to eat.

·        Lights come up.  Parent and child are in car on lower stage.

·        Child has a large soda cup.

·        Parent has an apple core

·        Child throws apple core out of the car window for the parent. 

·        Parent has an apple core

·        Child throws apple core out of the car window for the parent. 

·        Parent, child, and car exit.

·        Apple core remains on lower stage.

·        Animal and friend enter on upper stage.

·        A small animal comes and starts to nibble on the apple core.

·        A small animal enters lower stage, sniffs around and finds the apple core by the road.

·        Animal on upper stage tells his friend that dinner has arrived.  He swoops (or leaps) down toward the small animal.

·        A passing car, however, comes out of nowhere and hits the animal.

·        The small animal scurries away.

·        The friend goes away too.

·        The animal is left on the road by the apple core

·        Car enters lower stage suddenly and with a loud noise.

·        The attacking animal is hit and falls to the side by the apple core.

·        Small animal exits quickly.

·        Friend of animal gives a shout and exits the upper stage.

·        Parent and child return in their car.

·        The child sees the hurt animal and calls for the parent to stop their car.

·        They see the apple core next to the injured animal and are glad that the animal didn’t eat apple cores.  They would hate to feel responsible for causing the animal to get hurt.

·        They decide to take the injured animal to the wildlife center.

·        Enter parent and child in their car.

·        They both get out and pick the injured animal up and put it in their car.

·        They exit.

·        Lights go down.

·        The parent and child take the animal to the wildlife center.

·        The vet asks them what happened.

·        They explain how they found the an­imal.  They mention the apple core.

·        The doctor shakes his head.

·        The child explains how throwing food out of a car isn’t littering because it is biodegradable.

·        The vet explains how food thrown by the road attracts scavengers to the road which attracts predators.

·        The parent & child realize their mistake.  Food is litter!

·        The injured animal will be treated and hopefully returned to the wild.

·        Lights come up.

·        Vet is on lower stage.

·        Parent and child enter with injured animal.

·        Vet takes animal and exits.

·        Parent and child wait.

·        Vet returns.

·        Lights go down.
