PART 1:  Have explorers sit in a circle around the large gift box.  Talk about Christmas and gift giving.  Discuss questions like:

  1. How do you feel about the giving and receiving of gifts at Christmas?
  2. Why do we give gifts?

Discuss God’s gift in the birth of Jesus.

·        What does the gift require?  (Babies must be nurtured and cared for.  They take a lot of work).

·        In what ways are we like Mary and Joseph?  (How are we parents of hope and love?

·        How do we share our gifts?

Brainstorm simple yet meaningful gifts we can give to others.  The gifts can’t cost the giver any money, and they must come as a surprise to the recipient.  Make a list of ideas on the flip chart.  Ideas may include:

·        Cook a meal for your family.

·        Baby-sit free for a church member

·        Shovel snow (or some other household chore) without being asked

·        Etc.

Give each explorer two gift cards and ask them to write out a gift (like those brainstormed above) that they are willing to give.  Write the same gift on each card, including the giver, the recipient, and the gift.

·        Put one card in the gift wrapped box and have them take the other box home.

·        Plan to meet with them after the holidays.

o       They will take out the card from the gift box and share their experience of giving that gift.

o       What did it mean to them?  To the recipient?

PART 2:  Work on a musical piece with the explorers to share during worship.

·        If using handchime, practice two or three carols to share with the congregation.  They play while the congregation sings (There are many simple handchime books available where each child has a book that goes with their bell.  They play their bell when their word is underlined).

·        If you have other instruments available, or a guitarist or other available accompanist, use these resources to prepare carols.  Set aside a time in worship to lead the congregation in these carols.

·        Discuss that they are preparing to share a gift with the congregation.

Close in prayer.  Ask for God’s blessing as you prepare to share this gift.
