LEARNING OUTCOMES:

·         The explorers will affirm that God is with us

MATERIALS:

·         Materials to make a sock rocket (see below)

·         Goliath (a tall cut out)

PLAN:

·         Welcome explorers, go over memory verse

·         Tell the story of David and Goliath

·         Make sock-rockets (slings)

o        Go outside (if weather is good, use fellowship hall if raining)

o        Take turns trying to knock down Goliath

·         Return to room.  Discuss.

o        What is our armor?  (Who protects us?)

o        How does our armor protect us?

o        How was God with David?  How is God with us?

o        Discuss this statement, “God is with you as you are.”  (e.g., David could not wear Saul’s armor – but used what God had given him – what he was comfortable with)

·         Close in prayer.  Thank God for making us who we are.  Ask God to grant that we trust the way he made us and face life challenges.

Sock Rockets

A fun way to make sock rockets is to use waste hose.  They are available from Sara Lee Hosiery.  They will ship you a box of white waste hose (The toes are not sown in them).  There are about 240 hose in a box.  They charge ten dollars to cover shipping and handling.  Make your check payable to Sara Lee Hosiery and mail it to:

TO MAKE A SOCK ROCKET WITH WASTE HOSE:

  1. Take one hose and tie a knot on the toe end.
  2. Take a hand full of other hose and stuff them in the open end (the thigh end) down to the toe.
  3. Push the hose in tight and form a ball at the toe end.
  4. Tie a knot in the hose just on the other side of the hose that has been pushed down into the toe

Knot in toe                    knot on other side of hose stuffed into the toe

Bunch of hose stuffed into toe

  1. Now comes the fun part.  Stick your hand down the thigh end of the hose all the way down to the hose knotted at the toe end.
  2. Grab hold of the ball of hose at the toe end with this same hand.
  3. With your free hand, pull the thigh end of the hose off your arm and over the hose tied in a ball at the toe end.
  4. Knot the hose (again) close to the toe end.  You have just added another layer or “skin” to the ball of the sock rocket.
  5. Repeat # 5-8 as many as five to ten times.  Remember to tie a tight knot in the hose as close to the balled up hose as you can.
  6. This sock rocket or “sling” can be used by swinging the thigh end of the hose and aiming it at Goliath.

SAFETY CONCERN!  Tell all explorers to never pull hose over your face.  If someone pulls if off suddenly it can cause injury.  Also, never put hose around neck or tie people up with it.  Have a pocket knife available in case of a tangle.

Other ideas

  1. To enliven the experience, you may want to have your explorers come up with cheers to say while someone takes a turn at knocking down Goliath.

  1. One idea (we’re not using it but hey, its just an idea) was to make a Goliath with a head that can be knocked off.  The explorers try to knock off his head with the sock rocket (all right, all right, I said we’re not using this idea).  Its not exactly in line with the story (David cuts his head off after he knocks him down), but it certainly would enliven things.

  1. Maybe have the explorers dress up in costume before they tackle Goliath.  They could take turns taking off Saul’s armor before they pick up their sling and take a few shots at Goliath.

  1. Maybe have a group take turns ranking each of “David’s” throws.  They could raise flash cards to score each toss.  If someone is unable to hit Goliath with their sling, he could be pushed over after they score so many points on form, artistic expression, etc.

  1. Maybe have refreshments available to celebrate after Goliath has been “knocked off”
