PLAN:

·         Welcome explorers and review memory verse.

·         Decide on details of story of Ruth, divide up parts and act out story (see attached sheet)

The Drama of Ruth

Act out the Biblical story of Ruth.  Then, identify the important points of the story and update it to a modern version.  Act out the modern version.

The Biblical Story:

1.      Choose a narrator if necessary, especially if the explorers are young children.  They can act out the prompts of the narrator.

2.      Decide some details to add to the story such as:

a.      How the husband die (trampled by camels?)

b.      The thoughts and feelings of Ruth at critical points in the story.

c.      Perhaps give someone the roll of God in the story.  If so, what is God doing during the action?

3.      Discuss the motives and emotions of different characters.

4.      Act out the story.

The Updated Story:

1.      Choose a modern setting, such as in a church

a.      Decide why Naomi and her family leave the church.  What kind of famine can a church have?

b.      Naomi’s children marry and all the husband die.

c.      Naomi decides to return to her home church.

d.      Ruth goes, Orpah stays

e.      Ruth has to go to the church’s food bank (gleaning)

f.        Identify what makes Ruth “foreign”

                                                              i.      What is a shared prejudice that the explorers have?  Could Ruth be of another race?  Another country?  Talk with a funny accent?  Have unusual customs?  Have a physical disability?

ii.      How does Boaz “redeem” Ruth

1.      Marriage?

2.      Help her fit it, find a job, etc.

iii.      How can church (the explorers) work to overcome their prejudice?

1.      Get to know Ruth

2.      Have her explain what makes her unique

3.      Appreciate that even though she is different, she was loyal to Naomi, embraced her new church, etc.

2.      Act out story.

3.      Perform in worship or during another function.
