LEARNING OUTCOMES:

·         The explorers will understand that even though Israelites were not supposed to marry foreigners, the Bible is not ashamed of King David’s great grandmother Ruth, but rather celebrates this remarkable woman.

·         The explorers will be able to identify several ways God has made them different from others and celebrate what makes them unique.

MATERIALS:

·         Different colors of paper

·         Scissors, permanent markers (different colors)

·         Copier machine nearby

PLAN:

·         Welcome explorers and review memory verse

·         Introduce the story of Ruth (see attached sheet)

·         Do paper weaving (http://www.sheepusa.org/weave.htm) see attached sheet

·         Have a party to celebrate the birth of Ruth’s baby and our uniqueness.

·         Close in prayer.  Thank God for the unique way God has made each explorer (Use the differences the explorers have identified).

ADAPTATIONS:

Children

Youth

·         Young explorers may want to just make a drawing and forego the weaving.

·

The Story of Ruth

Dramatize the story of Ruth.  Use action and props.  Keep the age of your explorers in mind.  Ask them at each stage what they think will happen next.

·        Emphasize ways in which Ruth is different

·        Emphasize how the Bible story celebrates this woman even though she is a “foreigner.”  She is different.

·        Talk about how God makes each of us unique

Discuss what makes us unique.  The way we look, talk, think and feel.  Our likes and dislikes.  Our background, race, culture, social status, etc.  Discuss whatever is age appropriate for your explorers.

1.      Identify positive things that make us unique

2.      Lift up these differences to the group and celebrate them!

Paper Weaving

Have paper and supplies available to do paper weaving.  An example of how to do paper weaving can be found at http://www.sheepusa.org/weave.htm

To relate paper weaving to this center, you do the following:

·        Have explorers take a white piece of paper and write or draw one thing (in large letters or in a large picture) that makes them unique.  Fill up the whole page.  Use magic markers and write or draw in thick lines.

·        Take paper make a photo copy of their work on a colored piece of paper.

·        Cut slits in the white paper and used the photocopy to cut up and make the strips.  If you throw away the first strip and the last strip, you can weave the photo copy into the original drawing to make a checkerboard composite.  Its not hard to keep straight though younger explorers may need one on one help.

·        Make a collage of weavings that celebrate how God has made each of us unique.

·        Post the collage in the hallway or on a bulletin board or other display.

·        Each explorer can make as many weavings as time allows.

Have a party to celebrate Ruth’s baby and the ways in which God has made each of us unique.  Each unique trait, etc., that we have can be viewed as a gift from God.  If time allows, you may want to write a group thank you note to God for Ruth, her uniqueness and faithfulness, and for our differences.  Use the note in the closing prayer.
